Lorne wildlife

Lorne sits at the seam between sea, river and rainforest, so you can stumble across koalas, kangaroos and king parrots within a couple of streets of town. A few places worth bringing a camera.

Koalas in the gum trees

The eucalypt slopes above the town and around Sheoak Falls are reliable koala spotting territory. Look up — they sit motionless in tree forks for hours at a time.

Kangaroos at the Country Club

The Lorne Country Club fairways are infamous for the mobs of eastern grey kangaroos that graze around dusk. Drive in slowly and stop well clear; they'll usually keep eating.

King parrots & cockatoos

Crimson rosellas and king parrots are everywhere around town. Sulphur‑crested cockatoos cruise overhead in noisy groups, especially at twilight.

Whales & sea birds

Between May and October, southern right whales sometimes drift past on their migration. The pier and Teddy's Lookout are good places to scan the bay.
